The Role of Ethics in a TRP Driven Media Industry – A Recap of What Unfolded At Communique 2016

Communique’16 that was held in XIMB saw many imminent personalities from the media sector presenting their views on- “Ethics in Media: The thin line between reporting and influencing “.

The event kicked off with Dr. Sasmit Patra introducing the theme and referring to it as talking or taking a stereotype stand. He also proclaimed the theme to be a conflict of interest.

He was then followed by Mr. A.S.  Panneerselvan, Reader’s Editor, The Hindu, who enlightened the students about various prospects of media industry crisis and the cost of news. He also presented his views about the mechanism of maintaining a certain amount of regulation while reporting.

Next Mr. Vikrant Shanbhag, CEO Thatscoop, presented his views about the effects of social media and how news on the internet can affect the opinions of the viewers. He also mentioned as to how social media sometimes compromises with the level of authenticity.

After him Mr. Sujit Mahapatra threw some light on how too much content by media can be of negative influence and how there is a trust deficit between social and media sector. He quoted that “ Media is an industry we love to hate”.

Finally Mr. Vishnu Som told as to how social media and influence are synonymous to one another and how the support from a large group of people can turn anything into a truth. He also mentioned about how important it is to differentiate between credible and non credible media.

The session stressed on the importance of awareness amongst people about how to differentiate between relevant and irrelevant news is important for the spread of information.

Also a rise in the credibility of information provided by the media would be of great significance as to how information is perceived in the public.
