Can you imagine a place where every household is involved in creating only exquisite arts and crafts?
Be it the oldest member of the family or the youngest, even housewives create something, paint all along with love and much patience.
In the heritage crafts village of Raghurajpur in Puri, Odisha every household is an artist’s studio and has a story to tell. Inhabited by artists producing sheer poetry on pieces of clothes, palm leaves, stone carvings, the place has nurtured an age-old tradition.
The artisans here, deeply driven by the passion and profound love for culture have kept alive an intricate art form since 12th Century AD.
It is also the only village in India, where each family is engaged in one craft or another. There are 103 households having 311 artisans in the village. Some of them are winners of National Awards.
Creativity, in the village, flows in abundance and skills manifest into an emotional realisation of art. Not just restricted to canvas and cloth, even the walls have been transformed to pieces of art with depiction of mythological scenes from Panchatantra, Ramayan and other holy books.
The village looks like a living museum of paintings.
The community of artisans at Raghurajpur have dedicated many generations to art, standing up to hostile challenges, as they tread the path of a cultural entrepreneurship, unique to their community.
It is just heartening to see a tiny hamlet in Odisha, showing the World that art rules the hearts even in this age of crude materialism.
