A lot less has been written and talked about SnM – a Hip-Hop crew based out of Rourkela who brought laurels to our State. A young energetic dance group, SnM (Synergy and Mavericks) whose members are students from NITR (NIT Rourkela) defied all odds to become the First Runners up at Indian Hip Hop Championship. Winning a Silver Medal and along with it a lot of accolades, they are all set to represent our Country at the World Hip Hop Dance Championship – Las Vegas, this August.
Comprising of students from two different dance groups who came together for the event, they have catapulted not just Rourkela but India onto the global hip hop circuit after their incredible win.
From proving their mettle on the first day, where each crew had just 30 seconds to show what they were capable of to the epic finale which they nailed, its been nothing but a roller coaster ride for these bunch of students who came together.
After taking up the mammoth challenge and coming victorious, there is a bigger problem which stares them in the face – lack of funds. Also in a Country, where studies and college assignments are given higher priority, it’s their passion and hunger to win which drives them to take out time for their much-needed practice for the grand finale.
We caught up with the talented bunch and asked how they managed juggling time between studies and practice, this is what have to say in reply.
SnM: Being students of an engineering college it is difficult to devote your time entirely to the cause of dance. Many of our crew members are final year B.tech students and it was a rather uphill task amidst classes and assignments. There were co-ordination problems as getting all 25 of our members together at any point of time was a huge challenge! But its our passion for dance which helped us come together and support each other at all times. This also helped us continue our academic curricula without hampering the practice much. But we definitely need more practice to take it to the next level.
That brings us to the question of what next?
SnM: Our crew has qualified for the World Hip-hop Championship to be organised in Las Vegas, Nevada. As of now we are facing a shortage of funds and will try our best to approach sponsors for our team as well as generate some revenue by organizing workshops. If we succeed in doing so, we’ll represent our nation in the event. Alongside this, we are preparing our team for HHI 2017.
There are always some people who play a huge role back-stage, any such special people who deserve a mention?
SnM: SnM stands for “Synergy and Mavericks”, the two dance clubs of NIT Rourkela. Most of the members of the crew are members of either of the dance clubs. The alumni of our institute deserve a special mention for sticking out their necks for us! They helped us by providing anonymous financial support which somewhat eased our journey and took some burden off our shoulder.
You have taken Odisha to a whole new level in Dance. How would you contribute to the development of dance/arts in Odisha?
SnM: we are planning to organize workshops for Hip hop, Freestyle, Waacking and other dance forms for the dancers (including school students) in and around Rourkela first. Based on the response we’ll expand in the future. As of now, we are mainly focusing on refining our skills and improving ourselves to give performances which will leave our viewers spell-bound!
We would surely love to see these brilliant dancers in world rounds. Any message for our readers?
SnM: When we started off, that was about one month prior to the event, none of us imagined that we would end up winning, neither did we have too many expectations. We all came together, shared our ideas and got down to practicing. We kept pushing ourselves and we think all the hard work finally paid off.
We asked them for a message to our readers:
Find your passion and work hard towards it! Get a few people together who share your vision and everything else will fall into place!
Check this really cool video where these super-talented guys flaunt their moves!
Riding high on the victory, the 25-member crew is now looking for funds to participate in the World Hip Hop Championship. We cannot wait to see them ‘script’ a win into what’s going to be nothing less than history! #GoSnmGo
