The Silver City has done it again!

In a move which actually adds a ‘silver lining’ to the life of farmers, specially when their produce is crippled by droughts and other unforeseen natural calamities –  NRRI(National Rice Research Institute), Cuttack has developed a mobile app called riceXpert which takes a step towards solving few of their problems.

Cuttack

It uses technology and data to empower the farmers and provides them with real-time information related to farm practices, insect pests, nutrients, weeds, nematodes and disease-related problems.

It also gives details of rice varieties for different ecologies, farm implements for different field and post harvest operations.

The app provides a direct communication link which enables the farmers to consult a panel of experts. You can send a query using photo, text and voice through this mobile app and get help at the click of a button.

NRRI scientists, in another breakthrough have also developed world’s first high protein rice variety ‘CR Dhan 210’ apart from this unique mobile app. The ‘CR Dhan 210’ variety has 11 per cent protein in comparison to 6 percent in normal rice varieties, has been notified by the Central Varietal Release Committee for cultivation in different states in irrigated condition.

The rice varieties are developed via ‘Doubled Haploid’ technique. The rice varieties developed through this technique will have the yield potential equivalent or better than hybrids in one hand, and on the other hand, farmers need not to purchase the seeds every year as they can save their own seeds for next crop.

With rural internet poised at a growth due to penetration of low-end smartphones, the app is a boon for the farmers to access world-class information at their fingertips. Hopefully this app will be able to improve the plight of the farmers in our Country and add a ‘silver lining’ to their life!
