According to Wikipedia, Secret Santa is a Western Christmas tradition in which members of a group or community are randomly assigned a person to whom they anonymously give a gift. Often practiced in workplaces or amongst large families, participation in it is usually voluntary.

Secret Santa

Syncing up to this tradition are Bhubaneswar residents Abhishek Bakshi , Samrat Mazumdar and Sourav Bhanja who have come up with a noble idea to spread the spirit of friendship and generosity on Christmas in a noble yet interesting concept.  This group of 24-year old engineering graduates have launched a Secret Santa website that invites residents of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack to register themselves as Secret Santas. Each Santa will then be assigned a randomly-chosen Santee (receiver of the gift) and the Santa will then be responsible for sending the Santee a gift on or around Christmas.

The ground rules are simple. The Santas are not allowed to reveal themselves to the Santees, but are supposed to gather information on them which would help the Santas choose an appropriate gift to give. Because of the random allotment of Santees, it is highly unlikely that a person will be the Santa and the Santee of the same person.

The gift should cost a minimum of 300 rupees, and gift wrapping along with a card is encouraged. However, participants have also been requested to not go over-board on the expenses. The idea is to surprise people with one’s thoughtfulness, not extravagance! Second-hand gifts are not allowed to be used.

Anyone above the age of 18 and living in Bhubaneswar/Cuttack or someone who has any ties to either of these cities can participate as long as they provide an Indian shipping address. However, only those really serious about carrying out their commitment should apply because defaulters will find their names paraded in the website’s “hall of shame”!

Those interested in becoming a part of this unique endeavor can register themselves on http://bbsrsecretsanta.com/.
The registration has  begun from 25th November and will continue till 7PM on 10th December.
