This eatery has no name and we have decided to call it Maati Haandi Mutton Dokaan. Located in Acharya Vihar in a gullie adjacent to the Doordarshan Kendra, this place is a non veggie’s delight!

The mutton curry which the specialty of this place is unique because unlike conventional methods, the dish is cooked over flame from a wooden stove in an earthen pot ( maati handi ) . It is believed that the earthen pot gives a very tempting essence and the  flame adds to the tenderness of the mutton that is cooked.

One candid observation:  There is one great thing about street side eateries (barber shops as well) which you cannot miss. The kind of music that they play on their china phones/ Pocket FMs now. The sounds from the Nadeem Shravan era that fill your ears take you into a journey of nostalgia. Or disgust for some.

Where else in Bhubaneswar would you get an entire plate of steamed rice and half plate mutton for INR 60? The mutton jhola (curry/gravy) is an absolute delight when mixed with the piping hot rice and is nothing less than an orgasm to your taste buds.

Some Quick Facts:

  • Kishore bhai (the owner) has been running this hotel since the last twelve years.
  • An average of 120-150 kg of goat mutton is cooked here everyday.
  • The hotel has no menu BTW. You can see the prices scribbled on the wall itself.
  • There is an amazing pencil art on the ply-board near the entrance of the hotel.

Hygiene: Questionable

Taste: Unquestionable

Location: Take the adjoining lane beside Apollo Hospital and drive straight up to Doordarshan office, the hotel is just beside it.

Peak Service time: 12-2 PM.

Price: INR 60 (USD 1.5) for half serving of mutton and rice.

In my college days i have visited the place a few times and liked it . But the best was bhaina hotel (bapuji nagar) and odisha hotel ( sahid nagar) for mutton.

  • Good to know the Mutton Jhola tradition of roadside eateries is still surviving. There is one more place in baranga somewhere near NandanKanan which my friends talk about. But I miss the Bhaina Hotel ra Mansa Jhola. The thought of it still makes my mouth water. It’s been years now but I can still picture the peak hour rush and people standing right behind others who are seated and enjoying the mutton with the super awesome raita/salad. There are new places which have come to the fore in BBSR and I haven’t been to most of these places but I believe that mansa jhola of Bhaina along with the raita stands out.

    Awesome photos

  • Just for info sake….this joint is better known as Belaa Mutton. Its because they serve the full plate mutton curry in a belaa (meaning an oversized bowl)….i know there’s a contradiction here…full “plate” mutton in a bowl…but thats the way it is!! By the way the mutton here is not cooked in any earthen vessel…its prepared in the normal metal vessels..
And adding to the point made by Aishani Patnaik, there’s this dhaba called the “Hotel Sunya Bhagaban” at Trishulia Chhak which serves this Maati-Handi Mutton n Poda( roasted) mutton!! The Poda Mutton is a delicacy here..they stuff the marinated mutton into bamboo shoots n leave them on burnt charcoal…it gives a pretty rustic n smoky flavor to the meat!!!
One can find this place if one takes the Barang route to go to Cuttack!! Remember the landmark, folks…its Trishulia Chhak!!

  • It’s one of the best Mutton places in town..And you forget to mention that Salad’s also free !! And don’t know about other people calling it Bella Mutton or Matti handi mutton, We simple call the place, “Mayurbhanj Manksha” as the man(the owner) is from there itself..Hence,you could definitely find that taste similar to how Mutton is cooked there if you have had tasted manksha in mayurbhanj..:)
