Edward, Carlyle, Alice, Daemon, Stefan. It seems vampires have replaced humans in fantasy series! Thanks to the I-know-what-the-teenager-might-like writer Stephanie Meyer we have the Twilight series, which has the damsel- in- distress Bella falling for a Greek god-like vampire Edward. And throw in all werewolves and (no offense Twilight fans) lame dialogues like “You are my personal brand of heroin”!
Anyway Meyer seems to be riding high with the royalty from the film adaptations that have become hugely popular, especially for Robert Pattinson. All he seems to do is parade with a chalky face and inspire constipated looks from Kristen Stewart. We should actually see the latest film, Breaking Dawn. No seriously. Not ironic at all. *Straight face*
Another eagerly watched vampire tale is the ongoing TV series Vampire Diaries, now in its third season. It does have almost similar motives, the sad girl and the brooding vampire. The first two seasons at least scored for their pacy plots and thrilling endings that made you sit on your toes and wait for the next episode to be aired.
Let me not even get started on the series aired on Star One Pyaar ki Ye Ek Kahaani, which is just a wild pudding of both Twilight and Vampire Diaries. It’s meant to be scary but fails by light years and features a non-actor Ian Somerhalder look-alike! Ah the good old Aahat days! But how many more vampires? From vampires to werewolves to hybrids to vampire hunters! Seriously? The fantasy genre needs to reinvent itself.
Fantasy writers, looking forward to good de-vampired fantasy fiction!
PS: Lovers of the Inheritance series of Christopher Paolini, the final book Inheritance has been released in November 2011.
