Odisha is a state which boasts of great orators and writers of national acclaim, but when it comes to serious debating amongst the youth we seem to lag behind. As students we would have definitely participated in Group Discussions and extempore competitions but does that really make the cut ?
To answer that question, we need to know some facts about conventional debates. For starters, there are no coherent rules in general debates, the criteria of judgment is skewed and since most of them are ad-lib, we gain very little knowledge.
What are the alternatives to get a wholesome debating experience which would not only quench the thirst of debating but also greatly amplify our knowledge base to a higher level?
That’s where MUN( Model United Nation) comes into the picture.
MUN-ing is a global phenomena, a national rage. There are plethora of MUN held all over India.
In simple words, MUN or Model United Nation typically refers to a simulation of the United Nations where each participant represents his/her country as a delegate. They engage in deliberation on a specific agenda of global importance during the council. There is an Executive Board consisting of eminent and highly experienced delegates who oversee the proceedings and last but not the least, an international press consisting of budding writers and shutter bugs cover the council sessions.
There are basically two forms of discussions in the council which are the moderated caucus(controlled formal debate/discussion) and the unmoderated caucus(uncontrolled discussions amongst delegates) and the ultimate aim is to form a resolution to pass them with majority votes. Now it all may seem a lot of information to swallow in one read, but once you get a hang of it, the hangover lasts for months!! The social events (delegate dinner and post session party) add to the excitement and fervor of the event.
The benefits of MUN are :
● enhanced debating skills(2-3 days of debating is bound to bring the best out of you)
● increased knowledge base(extensive research before the council ensures this)
● diplomacy(intense lobbying is an integral part of the council)
● exposure(In a communion of delegates hailing from different colleges, it is a natural add-on)
Odisha Debating Society(ODS) team is going to conduct Odisha’s First National MUN this April in Bhubaneswar. So people, come aboard the MUN train to explore a new dimension of debating.
