“This is unbelievable! Look at this! There’s no city like this in the world. There never was.”
I decided to download Midnight In Paris during a rigorous session of conjugating French verbs on a cold, cold night. Well, I was learning the language – I might as well feel French, I decided. But of course, something entirely different happened. Magic happened!
Imagine sauntering into Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night, suddenly. Imagine a different kind of time-travel. Not science-fiction, of course, but a gentler kind of nostalgia. And then, imagine a sepia toned Paris in the rain. That’s what Woody Allen does. Unadulterated magic!
Gil (Owen Wilson) is a writer in dilemma. He is a successful scriptwriter, but is grappling with his first novel. He and his fiance, Inez (Rachel McAdams) travel to Paris, and thus, begins Gil’s unique journey into love and introspection. Throughout the movie, one might feel that this is in fact Woody Allen’s own story, probably that his life would have been happier if he lived in an earlier time.
Of course, saying too much would mean giving away the rest of the movie. But yes, if you have a passion for history, and love the sound of incessant rain, do watch this film.
