Drive down through the hills of Khandagiri and Udayagiri on the road to College of Engineering & Technology and within a few hundred metres there comes a crossroad. On a quiet right corner of the square is an idyllic shack that sells tea, snacks, milk, soft drinks, cigarettes, et al. Not many people know of this place and those who do, know it by the name of Bhaina Chaa Dokan (Big brother’s tea stall).
Bhaina as Bidyadhar Dalei is known has been running this stall for the last two years and people, mostly neighbourhood locals and college goers throng this place for their evening cuppa` tea. Yes, tea is something that Bhaina takes pride in. I’m not much of a tea-drinker myself but I would still say he makes a really fine garam chai, strong enough to rewind you after that boring lecture or a bad day you just had. On your request, he might as well add some cardamom or elaichi for a flavour but that is extra beyond the regular fare of Rs.4.00 a cup and Rs.3.00 for a half cup of tea. The USP of his place the way bhaina says is
“Jete bhala byabahara, sete bhala beppara!”
which roughly translates to ‘the better the behaviour, better is the business’ and he definitely reminds himself of this line when he opens shop every morning at 5am.
This place rests in the foothills of Udayagiri and overlook three roads that are not used most of the time given that this is still an outer suburb of the city.
With lots of greenery and fresh air around, three empty roads complemented with an open sky with a scope to witness a really romantic sunset over a cup of tea, can it get any better if you have your loved one(s) for company?
